A casino cluster effect is the term used to describe a development of casinos which form in cluster, thus increasing gaming and tourism, and one of the most successful examples of this is in Macau, where they achieved record gaming revenues and growth between 2004 and 2013, compared to standalone casinos. An article by The Innovation Group’s (TIG) Michael Vanaskie in January researched the casino cluster effect and the knock-on effect it had on tourism and gaming revenue in two particular areas; Macau and Manila. Many other jurisdictions are trying to follow in the successful footsteps of Macau, including South Korea – Incheon to be exact, where Paradise City launched in its initial stage almost two years ago! Two more integrated resorts are currently being developed in Incheon, and if the owners get the IR right, Incheon which is situated approximately an hour away from Seoul, could have all the makings of a successful casino cluster.

Facilities of the casino include northeast Asia’s largest nightclub, a museum for arts, a spa with an east meets west theme, a retail plaza, boutique hotel and fine dining. After a slow start, the casino has seen a steady increase in visitor numbers and revenue and it’s all thanks to simmering of tensions between Korea and China.
Incheon is set to see the doors of the Caesars Entertainment casino resort (Caesars Korea) open its doors in 2021, if it’s not hit with setbacks and it’s situated a short 15 minute drive from the airport. It will be Caesars first integrated resort in Asia and promises to be a modern icon with classic and contemporary blends of Greco-Roman architecture and never-before-seen creative amenities. Steven Tight, the Caesars president of international development said; “Since Caesars new IR will be the first and only internationally branded integrated resort in the region, its debut will add a differentiated IR option. Furthermore, as evidenced by other markets such as Las Vegas, Macau and Singapore, an IR fosters innovation in tourism products – new shows and attractions, better rooms, higher quality services which attract more visitors.”
More Competition

Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment, a US tribal casino company are bringing competition to the table, thanks to a penned deal with Paramount Pictures, which will see a massive theme park and casino opening in 2022. Inspire; known as the integrated entertainment resort (IER) will boast South Korea’s largest indoor sports (and concert) arena with as many as 15,000 seats, and the project hopes that the arena will echo the success of the Mohegan Sun Arena, situated between New York and Boston, with Live Nation providing live acts for customers. Facilities include a private air terminal, indoor climate-controlled water park, a pool area and the biggest hotel ballroom in the entire Incheon and Seoul district! Mohegan Gaming CEO Mario Kontomerkos says;
“This is a combination of integrated attractions that just doesn’t exist in market today. Inspire is the perfect catalyst to spark Incheon’s transformation into the industry’s next major entertainment hub.”
It’s important to note that the TIG paper notes that clustering of casinos isn’t the only option for tourism and revenue growth through gaming. Interestingly, Singapore only had a pair of stand-alone IR’s and made it a success.
